About the Charity

Tamarind Tree is a Maharashtra Govt. recognised school providing education (Pre Primary to class 8) to first generation learners from the tribal community of Warlis. Unlike a normal school, it is structured as a computer lab – where students learn virtually on Tamarind Tree’s Learning Management platform. Besides virtual learning, there are co-curricular activities. Meals are also provided to the students. Pre-COVID-19, students were charged Rs.500-750 p.m. With COVID-19, the entire activity has shifted to Tamarind Tree’s online portal MyBigCampus with no fees charged. This was subsequently scaled up and the material made freely available. Today, there are 400+ students, with 50 trained volunteers assisting them and more than 22 courses conducted since May.

My Big Campus is an interactive online environment that allows students to navigate learning at a pace that is comfortable to them. Designed with tools for learning and assessments, educators facilitate their learning, track progress and build interactive content. The online courses are based on the NCERT curriculum and hosted on Moodle - a global open source learning platform. In terms of users, there are no restrictions – the platform is open and free. However, the primary focus is to reach out to underprivileged areas with the target age-group being 6-16 years. The Virtual Class Server has a capacity of 150 concurrent users with recording facilities and backup. These are live classroom sessions which boosts participation and interaction. The platform capacity is 5000 students. Courses taught include Maths, Language, Science and also extend to practical subjects such as Financial Literacy and Media Skills. Tamarind Tree is looking towards creating new content and customised courses. There is also a need for marketing activity, to reach out to needy and deserving schools and NGOs.
