About the Charity
Snehalaya meaning 'Home of Love' was founded in 1989 to provide support for women, children and LGBT communities, who have been affected by HIV and AIDS, trafficking, sexual violence, and poverty. They operate in Ahmednagar, a town and district in the agricultural region of Maharashtra, and provide services to over 15,000 beneficiaries annually. Their vision is to develop the awareness and capabilities of individuals who have been deprived of their fundamental rights as a result of the inequalities that exist in society. Their mission is to provide rescue, rights and rehabilitative services to the communities in most need. To offer a safe exit point to women and their children trapped in the crippling cycle of poverty and abuse.
The Snehadhar Project of Snehalaya proposes to address the specific vulnerability of each of group of women in difficult circumstances through a home-based holistic and integrated approach. Snehadhar has been designed with a more flexible and innovative approach to cater to the requirement of various types of women in distress in diverse situations under different conditions. Under the Snehadhar project, Snehalaya is running a National Helpline and website www.snehadharhelpline.org. Any girl/woman can register her complaint on this helpline. They try to provide help through telly counselling as well as connect them to people who can help them (for those not residing in Ahmednagar). Sometimes their team members intervene in the cases personally. The annual cost of running the Snehadhar project is around Rs.19.58 Lacs. YVO has channelized the funds received for October 2018 to partially fund this project.
